Modulo Torsion is the electronic dance music project of Sam Nelson, a goth/industrial dance club DJ active in the Louisiana and Los Angeles scenes starting in the late 1990s. In his work as a research mathematician in the field of low-dimensional topology -- involving topics like the ways surfaces can be knotted in four-dimensional space -- certain mathematical structures called homsets, which can be computed as "colorings" of diagrams, arise. Modulo Torsion was started in 2019 when Nelson merged his two fields of topology and industrial dance music by sequencing homset elements as musical phrases and using DJ techniques to mix them into complete tracks.

Beyond Burnout is Modulo Torsion's sixth full-length studio album, accompanied by an EP of partially improvised live jam tracks called Bonus Burnout. The title refers to Nelson's completion of a three-year term as math department chair spanning the covid-19 pandemic, a time of extreme stress, anxiety and burnout.
